It's nineteen days until I turn twenty, and that is freaking me out, so instead of writing about that, I'm going to write about the way songwriters inspire me.
I write novels, but I look to people like Lorde and Grimes for writing inspiration. The way other people work and weave words in fascinating to me. Carly Rae Jepsen scrapping albums and starting over with new concepts -something Grimes has done too- or Lorde creating each album as a quick snapshot of her life.
Drug-binge work sessions and caffeine-fueled bursts of word working, the places where people write and the things they surround themselves with, and why. I love hearing about that stuff. I love hearing people talk about their process.
So here's a quote about writing from from Grimes/Ella that I really like:
I often do my best work when I can be completely absorbed by it. It was the same thing in high school with math. It’s always been about losing myself and losing track of time. I remember meditating on a math problem for over four hours, and only snapping out of it when I had to go to the bathroom. Those were the times when I could really feel the progress. It’s always a good sign to realize that six hours just disappeared. To see how time dissolves can be a powerful experience, and it’s one I miss. Because it’s one thing to talk about stuff and it’s another to actually commit to doing it; to solve a math problem or make music. Not being too self-aware in the process is also really important. - Grimes

Carly Slay Jepsen is Your Friend
It's been months since Emotion came out and I'm still jamming the hell out to it non-stop . . . I love Carly Rae Jepsen because she's the only Canadian pop star who's still relevant without being a douche. I mean, Avril Lavigne is . . . is she even still making music, after the nightmare that was Hello Kitty?
And Justin Bieber has been pumping out jam after jam, sure, but he's kind of an ass. Carly is the only one who's still talented and not being an awful human being (although I guess Justin's been cleaning his act up lately . . . )
The point is, I love this album, and you should too. Kuma and I have been blasting it all morning. My parents are coming home from a trip to see my aunt today, and we're waiting for them, cleaning, and drinking (yes, at 1 in the afternoon - it's as disgusting as it sounds) and generally having a good time.
Being the wonderful human being I am, I just wanted to post some of these songs in case some of you hadn't heard 'em yet. Enjoy!

New Music, Much Ado About A Lighter, & A 10 Day Book Update!
So earlier tonight I got a new mp3 player - it's nothing fancy, but it works, and it has a screen, and good sound quality, and honestly? It's just nice to have something to listen to again. My old ipod broke months ago. Of course I loaded it up with the new albums from Demi Lovato, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Selena Gomez. I'm so obsessed with pop right now, it's weird, considering I'm usually more into indie or punk. but whatever, it's a nice change of pace, I'll take it.
The other day I walked over an hour to buy a lighter and the woman at the gas station wouldn't sell my one. I'm nineteen, so I'm a legal adult here, and I have all the privileges that come with it - drinking, buying tobacco products, buying lighters, et cet - but I don't have an ID and I don't always look my age depending on what my hair and skin are doing, what I'm wearing, if I have my glasses . . . any number of things. so sometimes I get away with stuff and sometimes I don't. This time I didn't. My parents brought my home a new lighter that night anyway, but I needed one earlier, and it was kind of annoying.
As far as Shadows goes, I have one more final chapter to write tonight and then I'm done for the day - and thank god, 'cause I'm about to collapse. I know I already gave you guys a quote today, but here is another one:
